Most of the Pyridoxine we consume comes in the form of the hydrochloride salt. Many of us with a Morton’s Toe (i.e. 2nd toe longer than our great toe cannot convert normal B6 found in food to the active form known as Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate or P5P). Carl P. Pfieffer found this working with schizophrenics back in the 1970’s. Pyridoxine is a part of the B Complex family of vitamins, but is crucial in the formation of serotonin (mood) and melatonin (sleep). Without this conversion in our bodies, we may experience heightened anxiety states or insomnia in later years.
Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate is relatively nontoxic. Whereas some forms of Vitamin B6 may cause neurological damage if the doses taken are too excessive for long periods of time, P5P is free of these concerns.
